Obituary

Robert John Nisbet Sr. passed away in Bethlehem, PA on Thursday, June 20, 2024. Bob was born on August 18, 1938 in Buffalo, NY, son of Robert Nisbet and Dorothy Sherk Dunham.

He was an avid golfer, loved to drive, especially traveling for family vacations to Myrtle Beach and Florida, loved to cook breakfast for his family, and to go out with friends. He enjoyed a rich family life, always ready for visits from his children and grandchildren, eager to play cards and enjoy a meal together. One of his favorite questions was to ask what you had eaten at any particular time or place.

Through his 85 years, Bob had a full life with so many experiences and stories to tell. Especially in his later years, he was a lover of telling a good story, catch phrase, or tall tale, often surprising his family and friends with a new anecdote from his childhood, early adulthood, or among the many stories amassed from his career as a New York State Trooper. He served as a New York State Trooper for 22 years, retiring as an Investigator in 1988. Bob went on to work for Wegmans Food Market for 18 years as Regional Manager for Loss Prevention, retiring at the age of 70. He was well known through his working life as a colleague, friend, and mentor.

As a demonstration of God's grace, and through the prayers of many, including those of Vickie Nisbet, his faithful wife of 44 years, he found forgiveness professing faith in Jesus Christ in the second half of his life. He expressed profound gratitude to God for the mercy that shaped the latter chapters of his life. He was a cherished member of New Covenant Christian Community Church in Bethlehem, PA, even though his illness prevented him from attending church in-person through periods of his final years. He was appreciative of the opportunity to participate in online services, and was always moved by hearing the gospel during services held by his son-in-law, Pastor Nithin Thompson of City Alliance Church in Williamsport, PA.

His love for life, faith, and the strength he found in his family pushed him through and beyond the limits of his struggle with chronic illness and old age. These short remarks feel inadequate to capture the scope of his life and how dearly he will be missed.

Survivors: He is survived by his wife Vickie Nisbet, children Colleen Murphy, Brian Nisbet (wife Patricia Nisbet), Jackie Nisbet (husband Nithin Thompson), Jamie Nisbet, Kelly Nisbet, Kimberly Roberts (husband Brian Roberts), Kristeen Nisbet, Robert Nisbet Jr. (wife Christy Nisbet), Scott Nisbet (wife Marla Nisbet), the kids who knew him as "Gramps," his siblings Jean Turner Bartholomew and James Nisbet (wife Joan Nisbet), many members of the extended family and loved friends including those who supported him during the end of his illness such as friends John Callahan and Brett Young, daughter in-law Christy Nisbet, the kind staff of Fresenius Kidney Care Bethlehem and New Covenant Christian Community Church. Robert is predeceased by his much missed mother, Dorothy Sherk Dunham and his son Steven Nisbet..
